In 1965, when the recreation and athletics complex opened, UW-Stout’s enrollment was less than 3,000. In fall 2022, enrollment was more than 7,200. Sixty years after construction, UW-Stout's Sports & Fitness Center needs a refresh. Due to its deteriorating conditions and lack of accessible space, Stout students, athletes, coaches and administrators have endorsed a call for change.
The Renovation Project adds a new entrance and addition to the Recreation Complex that will increase open recreational fitness space for cardio and strength training for a variety of recreational users. The original six-lane swimming pool, which closed in 2018 due to deteriorating conditions, lack of use and the high cost to repair, will be transformed into a multi-use gym. The athletics weight room will move to the current fitness center and its existing location will convert into a multi-use studio space. Locker rooms will be expanded to improve privacy and accessibility, and updates are planned to laundry, storage and other support areas.
