National Panhellenic Conference Sororities

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the umbrella organization that represents 26 International and national women’s fraternities and sororities.

College Panhellenic Council, or Panhellenic, is UW-Stout’s coordinating body of the two NPC sororities on campus. The council promotes scholarship, philanthropy and provides activities and programs throughout the year to address current issues affecting college women.

Alpha Phi is a sisterhood of women supporting one another in lifelong achievement. Our values encourage intellectual growth and success by offering lifelong friendships and memories, alumni networking opportunities, and a variety of events for all throughout the year, which encourage bonding between members and help create a foundation of lasting opportunities. We strive to main strong philanthropic efforts with over 250,000 active members internationally. Explore our chapter to find out more about what could be your home away from home, your second family, and the beginning to endless opening doors.

Independent Fraternities & Sororities

At UW-Stout we have a number of recognized fraternities and sororities that are not associated with an umbrella organization. These chapters are diverse and unique organizations, often with special interests that are founded on our core community values.

Find the Right Chapter for You

Deciding which fraternity or sorority is right for you is really all about fit.  Luckily, each chapter organizes a recruitment process so that you can explore your options and find the best fit.

Recruitment happens at the beginning of each semester for students interested in joining a Greek-letter organization.  Recruitment is a process of mutual selection and it's a great chance to reflect upon your values and decide what's important to you.  It also gives you the chance to interact with the chapters, get to know one another and ask questions.

Though each chapter does recruitment differently, we encourage you to get to know a variety of our chapters in order to choose the right chapter for you.

Independent and NIC Recruitment

The recruitment process for Independent and North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) chapters varies by chapter. Many chapters recruit the first few weeks of each semester and hold a variety of events for those interested in joining. Reach out to these chapters for additional information on recruitment.

Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment

Recruitment is managed through the College Panhellenic Council at UW-Stout. There are two opportunities to go through recruitment: Primary Recruitment and Continuous Open Bidding.

Primary Recruitment

Primary recruitment is conducted during the first three weeks of fall semester. UW-Stout utilizes a continuous recruitment model that is more informal and allows for potential new members to get a feel for the sorority experience without all the frills of a fully structured process. Interested women are encouraged to attend events hosted by each chapter to find the organization that is the best fit for them. At the end of the primary recruitment period the College Panhellenic distributes invitations for membership on behalf of each sorority.

It is important to recognize that formal recruitment is a mutual selection process. Participation in sorority recruitment does not guarantee an invitation to join a sorority, nor does it obligate a woman to join. However, approximately 90-100% of the women participating in recruitment each year join a sorority at the end of the primary recruitment period

Every potential new member will be assigned a Recruitment Counselor who will be available during the entire recruitment process to answer questions, provide support and give valuable insight. The Panhellenic Advisor is also available to help explain the recruitment process.

Continuous Open Bidding

Panhellenic also participates in an informal recruitment process, or Continuous Open Bidding (COB). However, there is no guarantee that all chapters will be eligible to participate in this process after the primary recruitment period in the fall.  There is a higher likelihood that women can select to go through COB during the start of spring semester.

During COB, chapters host their events on a timeline unique to the chapter and often spread out the time of events to increase the number of women who can attend. Potential new members are welcome to attend events for various sororities, but there is no coordinated date for bid distribution. During COB, sororities will contact potential new members directly to extend an invitation for membership.

Learn more about Panhellenic recruitment by contacting the council at panhellenic@uwstout.edu.

Unrecognized Organizations

UW-Stout strongly discourages student participation in unrecognized organizations. An unrecognized fraternity or sorority is one which chooses to exist “off campus” and is not connected or affiliated with the university. As such, these organizations are not bound by the university’s policies and regulations, including policies relating to safety within student organization. We strongly encourage parents and students to ask thoughtful questions in order to make educated decisions surrounding fraternity and sorority membership.
