How to Apply as an International Graduate Student
To apply to a graduate-level or advanced degree program at UW-Stout, you'll need to complete the general UW System Graduate School Application, your program-specific application requirements, and the additional application requirements below.

For certain degree programs, there are additional application materials required. Check the program-specific admission requirements for your program on this page:
Submit payment by credit card at the end of the online application process.
Please note the application fee is non-refundable.
Submit a copy or your passport on the Collection Site.
Only ONE of the following must be completed to fulfill the English proficiency requirement:
- Official TOEFL score
- Minimum iBT score of 79, or minimum paper-based score of 550.
- Official IELTS score
- Minimum score of 6.5
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
- Minimum score of 53
- Other
- Complete a Bachelor's or Master's degree within the last five years from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or abroad in which English is the official medium of instruction.
- Complete UW-Stout's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
Note: Individual programs may have higher score requirements.
- We do not accept Duolingo scores as proof of English proficiency.
Academic records from all higher education institutions attended are required. Must provide official/attested academic records translated into English as well as original document.
A credential evaluation is required:
- Applicants who have already received a credential evaluation by a NACES approved member should request the evaluation be sent directly to UW-Stout from the evaluator. Official/attested transcripts are not required for these applicants.
- UW-Stout will perform an evaluation internally for applicants who have not had a credential evaluation completed. These applicants should request their official/attested transcripts and degree certificate be sent to UW-Stout directly from the institution(s). Academic records/official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended are required. Secondary transcripts are not needed. Original official/attested records not in English must also include English translations. All documents should be sent directly from the institution to UW-Stout using our address below or via email at gradschool@uwstout.edu . To maintain authenticity, we cannot accept transcripts from students, agents, or other intermediaries. In addition, our internal evaluations are for our use only and will not be provided to students.

How to Apply as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Student
If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) student from outside the U.S. and interested in enrolling in one of UW-Stout's graduate programs, please submit the following:

Admission to UW-Stout's English as a Second Language Institute does not require a minimum English proficiency test score. The scores obtained will be used to determine your course placement among our five ESL levels. Send one of the following official English proficiency test scores:
- IELTS
- TOEFL
- PTE (Pearson Test of English)
- Duolingo
For students who haven't taken the ESL examinations mentioned above, affordable online options are available for your convenience.

Graduate Application Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Application fee waivers are not available for graduate-level applications. A non-refundable application fee of $56 is required for submission.
No, the International Student Tuition Scholarship is based on previous academic performance and financial need. International students who apply to Stout degree programs are automatically considered.
UW-Stout offers $6,000** per academic year for students with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale). This amount is for an entire year so if you are eligible for the scholarship, you would receive half ($3,000) for the first semester.
* Please note: Customized Instruction, remedial courses, and ESL programs and classes are not eligible for the International Tuition Scholarship.
** The International Student Tuition Scholarship is competitive and is based on academic merit. While all applicants are considered, there is no scholarship guarantee.
The Stout University Foundation supports scholarships for full-time or part-time degree-seeking graduate students. It's easy to apply, one application will automatically qualify you for any foundation scholarship which you meet the criteria for.
No, GRE scores are not required.
Graduate Assistantships (GAs) are paid positions at UW-Stout where you also have the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience. The process for finding a GA position here is a bit different than on some campuses. Openings are posted on Handshake by academic programs and administrative units, and the process of searching for one and applying is much like finding any other kind of employment.
You must meet all of the following criteria to hold a Graduate Assistantship (GA):
• admitted to a graduate degree program (dual-level and non-degree seeking students are not eligible),
• enrolled in at least six graduate credits each term, and
• maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 each term.
Yes, we do occasionally accept three-year degrees from India with the following stipulations:
- The applicant must have graduated from a university that is NAAC accredited with at least an “A” grade.
- The applicant must have graduated in the first division.
- Visit access.uwstout.edu.
- Log in using your UW-Stout username and password.
- Select Self Service after logging in to Access Stout.
- Navigate to Admission -> Application Status at the bottom of the screen.

No need to continuously check this page for your official acceptance to UW-Stout. We will notify you via email and send you a formal letter.
No, we do not accept unofficial transcripts. Transcripts must be official and sent directly to us from the institution.
Graduate credit earned at another graduate school may be considered toward the fulfillment of program requirements. The transfer credit total is limited to one-third of the minimum credits required for graduation from the program. To be applied to program requirements, transfer credits must be approved by the Program Director.
No, we do not accept transcripts from students. Before an admission decision can be made, we need to have your official transcript on file, and it must be sent to us directly from the institution.
