The winter athletics season at University of Wisconsin-Stout hits full speed on Friday, Nov. 8, when the women’s and men’s basketball teams open the season at home with back-to-back games.
The women play at 5:30 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse against UW-Superior. The men follow with a 7:30 p.m. game against St. Olaf College.
Both head coaches, Jim Lake, men, and Hannah Iverson, women, are in their second years leading the Blue Devils.
The women’s team will play 11 nonconference games before beginning its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule at home at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, against UW-Platteville.
The men’s team will play 13 nonconference games before opening WIAC play Jan. 4 at UW-Platteville. The men’s first WIAC home game is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, against league favorite UW-Oshkosh.
Blue Devil fans will have a third option Nov. 8 as the men’s hockey team plays at home at 7 p.m. against the University of St. Thomas. UW-Stout, which opened the season Nov. 1, hits the ice again at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, against Gustavus Adolphus.
The other winter sports teams open in January. Women’s gymnastics, which won the WIAC last season and took second in the nation, begins action Friday, Jan. 17. Indoor track and field begins Saturday, Jan. 18.

UW-Stout athletics has eight men’s and 10 women’s sports.
UW-Stout student athletes have a history of excelling in the classroom. In 2018-19, 69% of the 457 athletes had a grade-point-average of 3.0 or better and 11% had a perfect 4.0. The combined student athlete GPA of 3.25 exceeded the general student body GPA of 3.13 for the ninth consecutive year.
UW-Stout had the top overall GPA in the WIAC. Also, the university’s student athlete graduation rate of 94.6% in 2018 exceeded the WIAC average and the UW-Stout general student body average by a wide margin.
