The second half of the 2018-19 academic year at UW-Stout gets underway Tuesday, Jan. 22, when students return for spring semester classes.
One of the major events of the semester will be the School of Hospitality Leadership 50th anniversary celebration Thursday and Friday, March 7-8.
The main event will be a banquet from 7 to 9 p.m. March 7, with keynote speaker Rick Roman, an alumnus. Roman is chairman and CEO of the Signature Room at the 95th restaurant in the John Hancock Center in Chicago. Registration is open for all events.
Other special events and dates to remember for the semester include:
- A screening and discussion of the 1931 film “Frankenstein” from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Harvey Hall Theatre, part of Reading Across Campus. A follow-up event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, will feature UW-Eau Claire Professor Joel Pace discussing race and “Frankenstein,” in the ballrooms of the Memorial Student Center.
- The second annual Recipe for Excellence Student Invitational Culinary Competition, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, for high school students, at the Great Hall, student center. The event is sponsored by the School of Hospitality Leadership and the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation.
- Hmong Stout Student Organization 33rd annual education conference, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23
- Career and Technical Education Executive in Residence, featuring Sara Baird, state Department of Public Instruction, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, room 110, Jarvis Hall Science Wing
- SkillsUSA career and leadership competition for high school and middle school students, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 28-March 1, at Fryklund Hall. Hosted by the STEMM College.
- Spring Career Conference, hosted by Career Services, Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 26-27, at the Multipurpose Room, Sports and Fitness Center
- Poet Joyce Ash reading from her book “Beautiful Fire,” 6 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, in the ballrooms, student center. Ash teaches at the University of Hartford and is a native of Cameroon. Hosted by the Literature Committee, the event helps celebrate Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March).
- The eighth annual Red Cedar Watershed Conference, Thursday, March 14, at the student center
- Science Olympiad state tournament, hosted by the STEMM College, Friday and Saturday, March 15-16
- Civil Liberty Symposium, sponsored by UW-Stout’s Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation, Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19
- Spring break, Monday to Friday, March 25-29
- "E"ffordability Summit, on the cost of educational materials, Wednesday and Thursday, March 27-28
- Wellness Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the Multipurpose Room, Sports and Fitness Center

- The 41st annual Early Childhood Education Conference, Friday and Saturday, April 26-27, at the student center

- Research Day, featuring student and faculty research presentations and awards, Monday, April 29, at the Great Hall and ballrooms, student center
- Stout Game Expo, new games created by game design and development students from the School of Art and Design, 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at the Great Hall and ballrooms, student center
- Senior Show, exhibits by School of Art and Design students, 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Applied Arts Building and Micheels Hall
- Commencement ceremonies, Saturday, May 4, at Johnson Fieldhouse
- Final exams, Monday to Friday, May 6-10
All events are open to the public, and most are free.
The fall semester wrapped up when 763 students received diplomas Dec. 15 in two commencement ceremonies.
